It was present and under construction during the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, standing as a silent witness to the events of that day.
The first radio alert of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, "AIR RAID ON PEARL HARBOR X THIS IS NO DRILL," was broadcast from the operations center at its base.
Despite being strafed and bombed, the tower and operations building at its base continued to guide U.S. aircraft during the attack.Construction of the tower was completed five months after the attack, on May 1, 1942.
Today, the Ford Island Control Tower stands as an iconic symbol of America's strength, sacrifice, and resilience during World War II.
After decades of disrepair, the tower recently underwent extensive restoration, including a working elevator, and is now open to the public as part of the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. The restored elevator allows visitors to reach the observation deck, providing a 360-degree panoramic view of the Pearl Harbor battlefield
